Used car seats/strollers... good or bad?

http://kansascity.craigslist.org/bab/858763040.html

this is a link to a used car seat and stroller combo im interested in. are used car seats always a bad idea? is there any place i can take it to to get it checked out?

Also - do any infant seats fit in strollers or do you have to get the one that goes with it? And how long do babies usually use strollers with the seat?

Also - are all car seat bases for infant seats the same??

You know used carseats are NEVER a good idea!!

It is a safety issue, there might be some slight tears in the plastic and you dont know that person's driving record... you knwo I'll say spend the money in it.

Unless you can borrow it from somebody you know WELL and know that person is a good conscious driver etc. If you dont have that then buy a new one.

As for used strollers, they're fine. Make sure they arent in too rough shape. Some things are good to buy new, just because of the use you'll give that stroller it'll be used for at least 2 full years, and if you're a mom who likes to go out and take her baby everywhere -like I do- the wear and tear is even more! So add it to a used stroller it might not be a great idea.. unless the stroller is in great shape.

I did some checking on a few websites and found that you could get a brand new stroller and car seat for about $100! I think that's a deal!

I'll send the links!

Good Luck!

It's advised that using a second hand car seat is not advisable as you don't know whether it has been in an accident or not. As for second hand strollers, as long as you check all of the wheels and fittings they should be fine.

Infant seats usually come with a brand new stroller but you can also buy them seperatley. I'd say that if a stroller is meant to have a car seat then any of the same make should fit onto the stroller but it is better to check.

Babies are supposed to go into a forward facing seat at 9kg (20lbs) so usually around eight months but depending on different babies when they reach the maximum weight.

Not all seat bases are the same but you can buy them on ebay for your pram. So if you have a graco seat you will need a graco base but it should fit any graco seat.

Hope this helps.

That particular seat is cheap and junky. A used stroller is ok, as long as you know who's used it before you and you can take it for a spin before taking/buying it. NEVER get a used car seat unless it's under 3-4 years old and you know exactly who has used it and where. Personally, safety's not worth the risk to me. I'd rather spend a thousand dollars on a car seat than take a used one from someone I don't know for fifty. But, that's just me.

Used strollers are fine as long as they are in good condition. I personally would not use a used car seat. Car seats can be damaged in car accidents and rough handling and the previous owner may not mention these things just to make a buck or two. Depending on the brand of stroller, the same brand of car seat may be able to be used. Babies can use the car seat in the stroller for about 3 or 4 months, or until they are about 12-15 pounds. And no, all car seat bases are no the same, if you get a new car seat, it should come with a base, but they usually have extras for that particular model of car seat if you need one.

Good luck!

Used car seats are not a good idea. No matter how much you check them out and they look good, you have no idea if there are any fine cracks in the plastic that are invisible to the eye. You do not know if it has ever been in a car accident, even if they tell you it hasn't, and the warranty is voided when it is passed to you.

I would not risk it, it is not worth the savings.

There are some infant seats that will fit in some strollers, some will not. You really will have to test them out, unless the manufacturer states that it can be used in certain seats.

I am not sure about the infant base question, but I am inclined to say they are not.

i am not really sure about the car seat thing. ask the people who are selling it on craigs list if its been in a car acaddent. it does not look that old and i don't see why you should not beable to use it. no you don't have to use the same stroller that goes with the car seat. if you get a Graco and Graco car seat will fit any Graco stroller. and i think with the evenflo ones are the same why. well with the basses they have to be the same brand as the car seat like groce with graco car seats and evenflo with evenflo basses.

honestly i think they are perfectly fine. all mine are used, and they are perfectly safe. you can take them to a firestation to get the checked if you are concerned. definately the way to go, brand new is too expensive! lol i have 2 kids - 5 car seats, 4 strollers, almost all used!!! they are so cheap i cant stop my mom and grandma from buying them...theres a car seat for every car they go in! lol!

I would never buy a used car seat. You have no idea what it has been through.

BTW! I'm jealous! I'm due March first and I still have yet to find out the sex! I have to wait until Oct 23rd!

A car seat is about the one thing that is universally put on the "buy new" list. So, if it within your means, buy new. A used car seat would still be better than no car seat though so if you cannot buy new, then get a used one with as much information as you can get. The best sources for a used seat would be a family member or friend who you trust to assure you it has never been in an accident. If you are going to buy a car seat from someone you don't know then be sure to ask if it has been in an accident (if it has it should be at the dump). Get the make and model before you buy and make sure that the seat has not been recalled. Check the manufacture date to make sure it is not more than 10 years old, even more than 5 years old should probably not be used due to revisions in federal safety standards and design improvements. NEVER buy a seat based solely upon appearance, "cute" does not always equate with "safe." If you do buy a used seat be sure to register it under your name so you will receive any recalls.

As for used stroller, just check for stability and ease of use, including folding. Not all infant seats fit on all strollers. Also, car seat bases are not interchangeable, you must use the one designed to be used with the car seat.

An infant seat can usually be used 20-22 lbs (depending on model) which your child will probably hit anywhere between 5 and 12 months. After that you'll use a convertible seat which can be installed rear facing for 30-35 lbs (depending on model) and then used forward facing. The absolute minimum for forward facing is 20 lbs AND 12 months old, but it is safest to go rear facing for as long as possible--probably 24 months or more before rear facing limit is reached. If money is a big issue you can use a convertible seat from birth, the minimum weight is 5 lbs just like an infant seat. You just don't get the convenience of taking the seat out with the base still in the car, convertible seats always stay installed.
